Simplifying Critical Reflection

A practical, editable Critical Reflection Template for Australian Early Childhood Educators and Educational Leaders.

Critical reflection doesn't need to mean writing a long narrative every time.

This simple framework has been designed to help educators move beyond simply documenting what happened and instead focus on the thinking that sits behind meaningful reflection.

The template guides you through four key questions:

→ What did we notice?
→ What are we questioning?
→ What will we do differently?
→ What happened next?

It then provides space to return to your reflection and record the follow-up and progress — because meaningful reflection isn't something we write once and forget about.

What's included?

🌱 A simple approach to critical reflection
A short introduction explaining the thinking behind the framework and how to use it.

📝 Editable Critical Reflection Template
A practical template with prompts to guide your thinking without telling you exactly what your reflection needs to say.

🔎 What Did We Notice?
Capture the observations, conversations, feedback, data, children's voices, family perspectives, team discussions or other information that prompted your reflection.

💭 What Are We Questioning?
Move beyond describing what happened and consider what you're questioning, challenging or reconsidering.

🔄 What Will We Do Differently?
Identify the changes, actions or possibilities that come from your reflection.

📈 What Happened Next?
Return to your reflection over time and record what changed, what you noticed, what happened as a result and where to next.

Why this approach?

There can be a lot of pressure to make every critical reflection a lengthy written narrative.

But meaningful reflection isn't necessarily about how many words we write.

It's about the quality of the thinking.

Sometimes a reflection may be short. Sometimes it may be much more detailed. What matters is that there is genuine consideration of practice, questioning, change and follow-through.

This template is designed to help make that process more focused, intentional and manageable.

Designed for real ECEC practice

Use it to support reflection on:

✔ Educational program and practice
✔ Team practices and professional conversations
✔ Children's voice and perspectives
✔ Family feedback
✔ Learning environments
✔ Inclusion and belonging
✔ Sustainability
✔ Transitions and routines
✔ Policies and procedures
✔ Professional learning
✔ QIP improvement priorities
✔ Changes made within your service

And importantly...

Critical reflection shouldn't end when you finish writing.

The Follow-Up & Progress section encourages you to come back to your thinking and consider:

What changed?
What did we notice?
What impact did it have?
What still needs to be considered?

This helps create a visible cycle of:

Reflect → Act → Notice → Revisit → Grow
